VW recalls Polo Vivo over safety concerns

A potential handbrake defect has led Volkswagen Group Africa to recall more than 25 000 Volkswagen Polo Vivo models.

Volkswagen Group Africa has informed the National Consumer Commission (NCC) about a safety recall for Polo Vivo models built between February 2025 and February 2026.

According to the German marque’s local arm, the handbrake lever fitted to the affected vehicles may not match the required specification, with incorrect rivet height causing the handbrake to not engage properly or, in rare cases, disengage unexpectedly.

This could pose a potential safety risk, especially when parked on an incline.

The affected vehicles will be inspected and repaired if necessary. However, the brand urges owners of the aforementioned model-year Polo Vivos to take the following safety precautions: when parked, ensure the car is in first gear for manual vehicles or in ‘P’ for automatic models, and to avoid parking on any steep hill until the inspection and any necessary repairs have been made.

“Given the high potential risks of the defect, owners of affected vehicles are urged to immediately get their vehicles to any authorised VW dealership for inspection. Any inspection and associated repairs will be done at no cost to the vehicle owners,” said Hardin Ratshisusu, acting commissioner of the NCC.

The NCC is monitoring the recall to ensure full compliance with the Consumer Protection Act.
