Hyundai reveals new SUV

Debuting at the New York International Auto Show, a South Korean automaker's Boulder Concept SUV showcases an adventure-focused design.

Previewing Hyundai’s first ‘fully-boxed’ body-on-frame architecture, which will underpin a future series-production midsize bakkie – scheduled to be released in 2030 – from the South Korean automaker, the Boulder Concept has made its debut at the New York International Auto Show.

The Boulder Concept is a product of Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design philosophy.

According to the brand, every aspect of the Boulder Concept has been designed to provide the freedom to pursue extreme adventures.

Adding to its adventure-focused proviso, the rugged concept SUV features ‘aggressive’ approach and departure angles, ‘generous’ ground clearance and water-fording depth, and 18-inch alloy wheels, shod in 37-inch mud-terrain tyres. Recovery hooks, replete with reflective material, are also present.

The Boulder Concept also plays host to dual ‘safari-style’ fixed upper windows, a low-profile roof rack with steel webbing – the latter providing additional load-carrying capacity – and spotlights.

Hyundai says the Boulder Concept has been designed to be a ‘blank canvas’ onto which accessories can easily be added.

Stepping inside via ‘coach-style’ doors, which feature reflective material for the door handles, the configurable interior is upholstered in ‘robust’ materials for key touchpoints, while several physical switches and knobs adorn the dashboard.

The real-time off-road guidance system facilitates confident off-road adventuring, Hyundai says.

A display spanning the base of the windscreen relays essential driving information to the driver.

“Our body-on-frame Boulder Concept SUV is a four-wheeled love letter to the dynamic, off-road way of life that many customers have been asking us for in our future-focused research,” said SangYup Lee, executive vice-president and head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Centre at Hyundai Motor Company.

“We are confident that something like this ultra-capable Hyundai SUV concept could more than fulfil the needs of this exclusive group of adventure seekers,” said Lee.
