How to make emigrating with pets easier

Follow these steps to help keep your furry companion calm throughout the journey.

Emigrating is exciting, but between the paperwork, planning and endless to-do lists, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Taking your pets along doesn’t have to add to the stress with these steps:

Step 1: Understand the entry requirements

  • Paperwork. Find out what requirements your destination has at least 3–6 months before departure to avoid delays and ensure sufficient time to tick all the boxes. Early planning also ensures the best flight routes for your pet’s comfort.
  • Quarantine. Some countries, like Australia and New Zealand, have mandatory quarantine periods. Knowing this in advance helps you prepare emotionally and logistically.
  • Vet visit. Ensure your pet’s vaccinations, microchip details, and health certificates are current and compliant with your destination country’s laws. Missing documents can delay your pet’s arrival.

Step 2: Organise the right travel partners

  • Choose experts. Working with a trusted partner ensures paperwork, airline bookings, and veterinary requirements are handled professionally. Certified pet shippers reduce stress and minimise mistakes.
  • Pet-Friendly Airline. Not all airlines are equal when it comes to pet travel, so opt for carriers with proven safety records and climate-controlled cargo holds to keep your pet safe and comfortable.
  • Trust them. Pets can sense your stress. Trust the process, know that you’ve chosen the right people and give your pet the feeling that everything is going to be ok.

Step 3: Choose and prep the crate

  • Choose the right one. Your pet’s crate must meet IATA (International Air Transport Association) standards. The right crate size allows your pet to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably, which reduces anxiety during the journey.
  • Introduce the crate. You don’t want the crate to be foreign or scary, so introduce it early and make it a positive space with familiar bedding or toys. This step reduces stress on travel day and helps your pet settle in quickly.
  • Make it homely. Before the trip, add a favourite blanket, toy, or even a T-shirt containing your scent. Small comforts can ease travel stress during long-haul flights.
