New Audi RS 5 duo shifts into high gear in SA

A German automaker's latest performance machines offer up to 84km of electric range, two body styles and prices topping R2.4m.

The new Audi RS 5 has arrived in South Africa, offered in both sedan and Avant body styles. The plug-in hybrid duo combines a twin-turbocharged V6 engine with electric power, while offering a choice between traditional sports sedan styling and the added practicality of an estate.

Here’s a closer look at their specifications, features and local pricing.

The plug-in hybrid system allows the RS 5 to cover shorter journeys on electric power alone. Its 25.9 kWh battery (22 kWh usable capacity) provides a claimed electric range of up to 84 km in the Sedan and 83km in the Avant.

Audi quotes combined fuel consumption of 3.8–4.3l/100 km for the Sedan and 3.9–4.5l/100 km for the Avant. However, once the battery is depleted, consumption rises to between 9.5 and 10 L/100 km for the Sedan and 9.6 and 10.2 l/100km for the Avant. Both versions have a 48l fuel tank.

Audi RS 5 weight, dimensions and boot capacity

Despite their performance credentials, the two RS 5 models offer different levels of practicality. The Sedan has an unladen weight of 2 355kg, while the Avant weighs 2 370kg.

Both are 4 896mm long and 1 952mm wide, although the Avant is slightly taller at 1 446mm compared with the Sedan’s 1 428mm.

The Avant also has the advantage when it comes to luggage space. Its boot offers 361l, compared with the Sedan’s 331l. Folding down the rear seats increases these capacities to 1 302 litres and 1 170 litres, respectively.

Audi RS 5 standard equipment and features

Both models come with plenty of RS-specific styling details, including darkened Matrix LED headlights, distinctive daytime running lights, gloss black RS detailing and black wing mirror housings. LED rear lights with dynamic light sequencing add to the look.

The standard 20-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels can be upgraded to 21-inch alternatives at additional cost. An RS sport exhaust system is also included.

Inside, the familiar Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus digital instrument display is paired with a dual-screen infotainment system. A head-up display and Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium sound system are standard, while a panoramic glass roof is available at no extra cost.
