How to know if you’ve outgrown your home
As life changes, so do our housing needs. Recognising when your home no longer suits your lifestyle is the first step towards making the right move.
Buying your first home is often an exciting milestone, but knowing when it’s time to move on can be a much more difficult decision. While many homeowners become emotionally attached to their property, there comes a point when a home may no longer suit their lifestyle, financial circumstances or future plans.
According to Adrian Goslett, CEO and regional director of REMAX Southern Africa, recognising when your home no longer meets your needs is an important part of your property journey.
“Our homes should evolve with us. As our lives change, so do our priorities, and the property that suited you five or ten years ago may no longer be the right fit today.”
Lifestyle changes
The first and most obvious sign that you have outgrown your home is significant lifestyle changes. Perhaps you’re feeling the symptoms of empty nest syndrome, or maybe you’ve started a new job and the hour-long commute is just getting too much for you. As we age, our priorities change and so does what we need out of our home.
“A young couple may soon realise that their one-bedroom apartment feels too small once children arrive, while parents whose children have moved out may realise they’re maintaining far more space than they actually use,” says Goslett.
Financial considerations
Financial considerations are another important factor. Rising living costs, maintenance expenses and changing household budgets can all influence whether your current home remains the right long-term choice.
“For some homeowners, a larger property becomes increasingly expensive to maintain, making downsizing a practical and financially sound decision. Others may choose to upgrade to a newer home that requires less maintenance and offers features better suited to their current lifestyle,” explains Goslett.
Don’t rush
“If you’ve found yourself repeatedly wondering whether it’s time to move, it’s worth taking a closer look at what’s prompting those thoughts. While moving is a major decision that shouldn’t be rushed, it’s often an indication that your housing needs have changed.”
Working with a qualified real estate professional can help homeowners objectively assess their options, understand current market conditions and determine whether selling, upgrading or downsizing is the right next step.
