Today is World Porridge Day!

Porridge is a highly nutritious food, rich in energy-boosting carbohydrates, digestion-friendly fibre, and healthy fats.

Every year, on 10 October, the world celebrates the humble yet powerful dish: porridge. Known for its nourishing qualities and comforting warmth, porridge has been a staple food for centuries in cultures around the globe.

One of the most popular forms of porridge in South Africa is mielie pap made from maize meal. Mielie pap can be served in different forms: soft and smooth for breakfast, or firmer and thicker for lunch or dinner.

Normally, mielie meal porridge takes 30 minutes to over an hour on the stove with continuous stirring and watching but with an Instant Pot, it is quick and easy. There’s no stirring or watching needed, and you can use Delay Start function to have it ready when you wake up!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mielie meal
  • 2-2.25 cups of boiling water (depending on what consistency you like your pap)
  • 1 cup of water for cooking
  • Butter and other flavourings to taste.

Method

  1. Place the trivet in the Instant Pot with 1 cup of water. On the trivet place an oven-save bowl or pot with the mielie pap and boiling water in.
  2. Use the Porridge preset for 15-20 minutes depending on the consistency you like. Once finished do a natural pressure release.
  3. You can also set the Delay Start the night before so it is ready when you wake up. Take into account time for the pot to pressurise when setting timing.
  4. Once finished add butter and any other flavourings you fancy.
