Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku reveals on-set boundary violation

Actress Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku shares her experience of boundary violations on set, sparking critical conversations about consent in the entertainment industry.

South African actress Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku, known for her roles in Outlaws and Red Ink, has opened up about a troubling experience on set, sparking important conversations about consent and personal boundaries in the entertainment industry.

In an Instagram post, Nirvana revealed that while working on a recent project, her boundaries were violated during the filming of a scene where her character was portrayed as a victim of murder and rape.

“I am writing to share an experience I had during a recent project on set, involving a violation of my personal boundaries in a scene where the character I was playing was being murdered and raped,” she wrote.

Her revelation coincides with ongoing discussions about consent on social media, recently intensified by a controversial storyline on Skeem Saam.

The incident took place during a night of filming where professionalism and respect were expected. “The rape could be implied in a close-up; it was rehearsed that he would push me over the car bonnet, lay on my back to whisper in my ear, then come out of the frame, which was on a close-up of my face screaming, and the scene would end there,” Nirvana explained.

“I had requested to be taken to therapy upon completion of my role,” she added. “My physical and psychological boundaries were no simulation of the act of rape.”

Seeking resolution, she asked for two things: Therapy and a written apology. The agreement was later amended to therapy and a mediated meeting. However, Nirvana described the response as hostile, accusing those involved of gaslighting and intimidation, which ultimately led to no action being taken.
