According to Dilmah Tea, a store specialising in the sales of various teas, rooibos tea is a “type of herbal tea made from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant, which is only found in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It has a nutty flavour and is known for its health benefits, such as its high levels of antioxidants and low levels of tannins.”
It is for this reason that the tea boasts multiple health benefits which can be useful to your body fighting off diseases and viruses.
According to the medical publication Healthline, these are some of the benefits that comes with consuming a cup of rooibos tea:
Low in caffeine – Unlike the case of black and green tea, rooibos is caffeine free which makes it the perfect alternative to the aforementioned tea options, in addition to this it is low in tannin making it easier for the body to absorb nutrients like iron.
Rich in antioxidants – This both protects your cells from damage by free radicals and reduces the risk of certain chronic conditions such as heart disease and cancers.
Beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes – “One 2009 study done in mice with type 2 diabetes found that aspalatin balanced blood sugar levels and reduced insulin resistance, which could prove promising for people who have or are at risk of type 2 diabetes,” highlights Healthline.
