Make your own passion fruit caipirinha at home

Unlike more complicated cocktails that require syrups or exotic ingredients, the passion fruit caipirinha is delightfully simple to prepare.

The Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail, loved for its simple yet bold blend of cachaça, lime, and sugar. But if you’re looking to add a tropical twist to this classic, the passion fruit caipirinha is the perfect choice.

Cachaça is the heart of the caipirinha, setting it apart from similar rum-based cocktails like the mojito. While rum is distilled from molasses (a byproduct of sugar production), cachaça is made directly from fresh sugarcane juice, giving it a distinct flavour that’s grassy, earthy, and slightly sweet. With the addition of passion fruit, fresh lime, and aromatic mint, this cocktail takes on a vibrant new dimension that will instantly transport you to a sunny beach.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole lime, cut into wedges
  • 2 teaspoons caster sugar (adjust for desired sweetness)
  • 1 ripe passion fruit, halved
  • 50ml cachaça
  • 4–5 fresh mint leaves
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint sprig and lime wedge, for garnish

Method

  1. Add the lime wedges and caster sugar to a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to gently crush the lime, releasing the juice and mixing it with the sugar.
  2. Scoop the seeds and juice from the passion fruit halves into the glass or shaker.
  3. Tear the mint leaves slightly to release their aromatic oils and add them to the mix.
  4.  Add the cachaça to the glass, then stir everything together.
  5. Fill the glass with crushed ice. Top with a mint sprig and a lime wedge.
