Your seven-step guide to setting up a water storage tank properly

The right water tank setup allows you to safely store precious rainwater for use in anything from drinking to garden irrigation.

Collecting rainwater is a smart and sustainable way to make the most of every drop. However, proper installation and maintenance are key to keeping your system safe, clean and efficient. Here’s how to get the most out of your water storage tank.

  1. Choosing the right tank

Capacity, colour, and shape are three factors to consider when choosing a tank that best suits your requirements. Determine whether your primary need is for drinking water or for secondary purposes like car washing or garden watering.

  1. Covering and screening

Prevent contamination by covering and thoroughly screening the tank to stop mosquitoes, birds, and animals from accessing the water.

  1. Overflow design

Design tanks to overflow onto gardens, infiltration trenches, or the stormwater system to avoid waterlogging and potential damage.

  1. Isolation mechanism

If your household utilises both rainwater and the mains water supply, ensure isolation between the two systems using a valve mechanism or tap to prevent cross-contamination. Seek advice from professionals for guidance on appropriate mechanisms.

  1. Sunlight exposure

Install tanks away from direct sunlight to inhibit algae growth, which can compromise water quality.

  1. Water filtration

If the stored rainwater is intended for drinking, install a reliable filtration system to ensure purity and safety.

  1. Flush diverter device

Implement a flush diverter device fitted onto the tank inlet to prevent the initial flow of contaminant-laden water from the roof entering the tank during rainfall, helping maintain water quality.
