1 killed, 20 injured in rockfall at Carletonville mine

A rockfall at Blyvoor Gold mine linked to a nearby earthquake claimed one life and injured several others this morning.

Emergency services have left Blyvoor Gold mine in Carletonville following a rockfall this morning that left one mineworker dead and several others injured.

According to Gauteng’s Emergency Medical Services in the West Rand District, confirmed to Carletonville Herald that EMS and ER24 crews responded to the incident at approximately 09:40.

Tragically, one mineworker succumbed to his injuries. Two others were seriously injured, while 12 sustained serious but stable injuries.

An additional six mineworkers suffered minor injuries and were evacuated to Fountain Private Hospital.

Preliminary reports suggest the injuries resulted from a rockfall at the mine.

Volcanodiscovery.com reported a 3.2-magnitude earthquake at 09:38, 16km southwest of Carletonville, which is within the vicinity of the affected mine.
