1 killed in suspected hijacking-related shooting in Edenvale

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal shooting on a busy Ekurhuleni road.

Police and emergency services were on scene following a fatal shooting on Dunvegan Avenue in Edenvale yesterday (June 10).

Bedfordview Edenvale News reports that, according to the Edenvale Community Policing Forum (ECPF), the incident unfolded during the afternoon and prompted a response from Edenvale SAPS, private security and emergency medical services following reports of a hijacking and shooting.

Mamba Strike Force confirmed on social media that one person sustained injuries and was assisted by emergency responders.

Upon arrival at the scene, a body was visible and the victim was later declared dead by paramedics.

Suspects fled the scene

Security reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects accosted the victim outside a business premises on Dunvegan Avenue.

The victim reportedly attempted to resist the attackers before being shot, after which the suspects fled the scene.

ECPF chairperson Sheryl Damerell described the incident as deeply distressing, saying she could not confirm all details of the crime scene but acknowledged the severity of what had taken place.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this time. When something like this happens, it hurts, it ripples through the community. The behaviour exhibited here by these suspects is absolutely abhorrent,” Damerell said.

She noted that while the number of suspects could not yet be confirmed, a lookout had been issued for a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident, pending official confirmation from SAPS.

Road closures

Parts of Dunvegan Avenue were closed off, with motorists and residents advised to use alternative routes.

A request for comment was sent to Ekurhuleni District Police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, but no response had been been received at the time of publication.
