Johannesburg police officers arrested a gang of 11 suspects who were allegedly on their way to commit an armed robbery in Orlando, Soweto.

Police intelligence received intel about the suspects who were planning a robbery in the area yesterday.

Police then intercepted the group of suspects, aged between 33 and 43, along Mooki Street and Soweto Highway as they were travelling to their target area.

During the search, police seized three unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as three vehicles, which were reportedly going to be used to carry out the planned robbery.

“The swift takedown was as a result of the operationalisation of information received from Crime Intelligence.

“The police held an observation on the suspects and decided to conduct a takedown before the suspects could commit the planned robbery,” says Captain Jeff Phora.

The suspects are facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as conspiracy to commit an armed robbery.

They are expected to appear in the Orlando Magistrate’s Court soon.
