12 dead in R81 Limpopo crash involving taxi and trucks
The Road Traffic Management Corporation has urged caution after a child was among a dozen people killed in a horrific crash yesterday afternoon.
Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has expressed deep shock and sorrow following a horrific crash on the R81 in Ga-Sekgopo yesterday afternoon. The incident involved a minibus taxi and two heavy motor vehicles.
Polokwane Review reports that while the cause is still under investigation, preliminary reports confirm that 12 people lost their lives. Families are now left to grapple with the devastating loss of loved ones.
“The news of this tragic incident is deeply touching, particularly when we consider the mothers and families affected by this loss. The provincial government stands in solidarity with the families during this difficult time and we are committed to providing them with the necessary support,” says Ramathuba.
Emergency medical services and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene to manage the aftermath. The premier, accompanied by MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye and MEC for Health Dieketseng Mashego, will meet grieving families today at noon at the Pietersburg Hospital Recreation Hall to assist with the identification process of the deceased.
The Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that the road was reopened at midnight and that it will continue to provide regular updates.
Road safety reminder
Ramathuba urges all motorists to exercise caution. “This tragic event serves as a reminder of the need for greater awareness and strict adherence to road safety regulations,” she says.
The Witness meanwhile reports the fatalities include a child aged between seven and 10 years old. The newspaper adds that the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said that it is dismayed at the horrific crash.
It is understood that all the deceased were in the taxi, including the driver. They were travelling from a church service at Solomondale to Magoro village outside Giyani.
RTMC calls for caution
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane urged truck drivers to be cautious on the roads.
“The Road Traffic Management Corporation is calling on freight and public transport vehicle drivers to improve their behaviour and put safety first.
“The R81 was closed for several hours as emergency personnel worked tirelessly to remove bodies from the wreckage. The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined as investigations are still underway,” Zwane said.
