15 dead after bus overturns on N1 near Touws River

A day after another serious bus crash on the N1, 15 people, including three children, were killed when a bus overturned near Touws River.

A bus carrying 78 passengers overturned on the N1 near Touws River this morning (July 2), killing 15 people. 

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said police, emergency services and disaster management teams were on the scene. 

“Preliminary information indicates that a bus transporting 78 passengers from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape overturned. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. Fifteen passengers were declared deceased at the scene,” Traut said. 

Among those who died were seven men, five women and three children. 

“Several other passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment,” Traut said. 

The circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation. 

The tragedy comes a day after another bus overturned on the N1 near the Beitbridge Border Post while travelling from KZN to a repatriation camp in Beitbridge.  
 
The driver was killed and 11 passengers were injured, according to Review Online
