A teenage girl died at Durban beach, while two teenagers were reported missing after being swept out to sea.

A teenager passed away in a drowning incident at Durban’s beachfront, Pirate’s Beach, on New Year’s Day.

Advanced life support paramedics, with NetCare911, responded to the incident just after 14:00 yesterday.

Paramedics arrived on scene to find lifeguards and Durban Metro Search and Rescue personnel attempting to resuscitate the teenager, believed to be approximately 16 years old. Despite their efforts, together with an off-duty doctor, the patient passed away at the scene.

It is believed that two other teenagers were swept out to sea, and lifeguards were conducting a search for them.

At this stage, the events leading up to the drowning are unknown, however, SAPS were at the scene and will be investigating further.
