17 arrested for alleged attack on housing complex in Lyttelton
Police pursued the suspects through the streets of the suburb before they could manage to corner and cuff them.
Lyttelton police arrested 17 people for allegedly attacking a housing complex on Monday morning.
Police said a complaint was received about an armed person attacking the complex around 11:00.
“Multiple units from Tshwane metro police, SAPS, and private security companies responded to the call,” Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller said.
“As the law enforcement officers and security arrived the suspects were attempting to flee the scene, and a pursuit ensued through the streets of Lyttelton area.”
Miller said the suspects’ getaway vehicle collided with vehicles of the metro police and security services during the chase and they were apprehended before they could get away.
“In total 17 adult males were arrested and will appear before the Pretoria magistrate’s court within 48 hours, on charges relating to malicious damage to property, theft, assault and reckless driving.
Lyttelton police station commander Brigadier TP Matlala thanked all the persons involved in making sure that the incident did not escalate to an “unthinkable” situation.
“In Lytteltons policing area the manner in which all the different law enforcement and private security companies work together, it is no wonder the criminals are always being arrested, ” he said.
