2 arrested after e-hailing driver robbed in Parkwood
Dashcam footage shows how an e-hailing driver was held at gunpoint by two calm ‘clients’.
An e-hailing driver is recovering after an armed robbery in Parkwood, Cape Town, on Saturday night, which was captured on his vehicle’s dashcam.
Two suspects, aged 20 and 28, have been arrested for the incident on Pers Road.
The dashcam footage, which has circulated widely on social media, shows the trip beginning normally with one passenger in the front seat and another in the back.
The driver and front passenger are seen casually talking before the man in the back seat pulls out a firearm, holding it to the driver’s neck while placing a hand on his shoulder.
The driver then hands his cellphone and wallet to the front passenger. The suspects and the driver remain calm throughout. After his goods are taken, the driver raises his hands, and the men jump out of the car.
The driver is seen taking a breath before continuing to drive.
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg says Grassy Park police are investigating.
Twigg explains that the e-hailing driver was robbed of personal belongings and an undisclosed amount of cash.
“According to reports, the driver responded to a pick-up request and, upon arrival at the address, two unknown males got into the vehicle. One of the males produced a firearm, and they robbed the victim before fleeing the scene,” he says.
Twigg adds that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
He confirms that two suspects have been arrested and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court once they have been charged.
Twigg urges anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app anonymously.
* The video has not been published because the suspects’ faces are shown and they are yet to appear in court.
