2 Belgian tourists killed in head-on crash in Mpumalanga

Two people were killed and two more were seriously injured in a head-on crash near Sabie after Belgian tourists allegedly drove on the wrong side of the road.

Two Belgian tourists died in a head-on collision on the R37 between Sabie and Mbombela on Friday.

The crash, which involved two SUVs, occurred near the Sudwala turn-off at around 15:00 and left two occupants of the other vehicle with serious injuries, Mpumalanga News reports.

It is alleged that the tourists had been driving in the right lane at the time of the collision. In South Africa, vehicles drive on the left, whereas in Belgium they drive on the right.

“We can confirm that the two tourists from Belgium, who were allegedly driving in the wrong lane, have died. However, an investigation is under way to establish the facts around this allegation,” said Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison.

He added that the two other victims were rushed to Kiaat Private Hospital in a serious condition.

Mmusi also urged motorists to observe the rules of the road for everyone’s safety.
