2 due in court after double Limpopo tavern killing

Two men are expected to face double murder charges following a deadly shooting in Ga-Selepe village last week.

Two Lesotho nationals are due to appear in the Mecklenburg Periodical Court today (July 6) after they were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two people at a tavern in Ga-Selepe village, outside Mecklenburg, on Thursday (July 2).

According to Polokwane Review, Limpopo police said the first suspect, a 50-year-old man, was arrested after investigators received information that he had sought medical treatment at a local hospital for injuries he allegedly sustained during the incident.

Police located the man at the hospital, where he was identified and arrested.

During the investigation, officers also recovered a 9mm pistol believed to have been used in the shooting. Police said the firearm had been reported stolen during an armed robbery in Midrand in October 2025.

A white BMW with no registration plates, believed to have been used during the incident, was also seized.

Another arrest

In a separate operation in Sehunyane village, police arrested a second suspect, a 24-year-old Lesotho national, who was initially detained for allegedly being in South Africa illegally.

Further investigations linked the younger man to the fatal shooting and he has since been charged with two counts of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Police also allege he was in the company of the first suspect at the time of the incident.

The 50-year-old suspect is expected to face two counts of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The younger suspect also faces a charge under the Immigration Act 13 of 2002, while police say additional charges could follow as the investigation continues.

The motive for the shooting has not yet been established.

Acting Limpopo police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers praised the investigating team, saying the arrests were the result of dedicated investigative work.
