2 Johannesburg metro police trainees die during recruitment process
One collapsed from heat exhaustion and another was found unresponsive during fitness tests at Ruimsig Stadium.
Two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) trainee candidates have died during the department’s ongoing recruitment and selection process at Ruimsig Stadium in Roodepoort.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed the incidents to the Roodepoort Northsider.
According to Fihla, Marvellous Michael Nyambi (24), from Rabie Ridge, collapsed from heat exhaustion last Thursday while taking part in the physical assessments. He was attended to by City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (CoJEMS) personnel and later taken to Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital for further treatment. Nyambi died the next day.
In a separate incident, Zwelethu Tekete (26), from Braamfischerville Phase One, was brought into the stadium unresponsive on Monday. CoJEMS personnel immediately initiated CPR, but despite their efforts, he was declared dead at the scene.
The physical assessments at the stadium include:
- A 5km run: To be completed in 35 minutes for men, 40 minutes for women
- Push-ups: 30 in one minute for men, 25 in one minute for women
- Sit-ups: 35 in one minute for men, 30 in one minute for women
- A 1.8m wall jump, with two attempts allowed
“The JMPD extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of Nyambi and Tekete during this difficult time. The well-being and safety of all candidates and officers remain our top priority,” Fihla said.
