26 taxi drivers in court as shutdown continues in Margate

Roads in KwaNzimakwe, Gcilima, Nositha and Port Edward are closed amid chaos and taxi violence in the KZN town.

Twenty six taxi drivers from Bambanani Taxi Association were arrested in Margate on Friday, and are appearing in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Taxi violence started in Margate last Monday and has affected passengers, leaving many stranded.

Taxis also blocked roads to Margate on Friday.

The chairperson of the taxi association, Martin Ngcungama, says the drivers are furious and have decided to shut down Margate this morning.

Areas affected by the shutdown are KwaNzimakwe, Gcilima, Nositha and Port Edward.

Bambanani was not operating last weekend, however, it is business as usual for Gamalakhe Taxi Association in Margate.

According to sources, a meeting will be held with the police this morning to try and resolve the matter.
