3 arrested after axe attack on Western Cape police officer

A Delft constable is in a stable condition after a violent assault outside a police station.

A Western Cape police officer suffered serious injuries after he was struck on the head with an axe outside the Delft Police Station earlier today (June 8).

Colonel Andrè Traut, the provincial police spokesperson, says the incident occurred at 02:05.

“A constable was standing outside the community service centre when he was approached by an armed suspect carrying an axe. The suspect allegedly struck the officer on the head,” explains Traut.

Another police officer who witnessed the incident immediately intervened and fired warning shots, causing the alleged attacker and two others to flee.

Traut says that in an attempt to evade arrest, the trio abandoned their vehicle.

Arrests

A joint effort between police and law enforcement advancement plan officers led to the arrest of three suspects: A 23-year-old woman and two men aged 23 and 25.

They are expected to appear in court soon.

“The axe believed to have been used in the attack was recovered at the scene. The injured officer was taken to a medical facility and is reported to be in a stable condition,” adds Traut.
