3 arrested over R1.8m SARS tax fraud
Fraudulent tax returns linked to Maps Africa Holdings in eMalahleni resulted in SARS suffering a loss of R1.8m.
Three suspects appeared in the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court, Mpumalanga in connection with an alleged R1.8m fraud against the South African Revenue Service (SARS), reports Witbank News.
The suspects, Thandiwe Patricia Mokwena (33), Thabiso France Motsoeneng (32), and Sfiso Doctor Mokwena (28), appeared yesterday, (September 29) after they were arrested by the Hawks’ Middelburg Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit. They were each granted R7 000 bail.
According to police, the investigation follows a complaint lodged by SARS. It is alleged that Maps Africa Holdings (Pty) Ltd, where Thandiwe Mokwena is a director, colluded with the other accused and one outstanding suspect to submit fraudulent tax returns for the period 2019-2021.
The company also allegedly submitted fraudulent VAT returns for the same period to claim VAT refunds.
The alleged misrepresentation resulted in SARS suffering a loss of R1 806 252.95.
The case was postponed to October 28 pending the arrest of a fourth accused. The investigation continues.
