4 robbers target taxi heading to Mozambique

A group of men who tailed a taxi to a petrol station robbed its occupants of their passports, cellphones and money.

The Bushbuckridge SAPS is on a manhunt for four robbers who targeted a taxi occupied by 16 foreign nationals heading to Mozambique on Friday.

The suspects took the commuters’ passports, cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money when the taxi stopped at a fuel station in Ga-Relane in Bushbuckridge.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the taxi was on its way from Acornhoek when the driver noticed flashing lights from a white Toyota light delivery vehicle in his rear-view mirror. The driver reached a fuel station at which he thought it safe to stop.

“However, the taxi was followed to the fuel station. Four armed men are said to have alighted from the Toyota. One of the suspects allegedly fired a shot before approaching the taxi driver,” says Mohlala.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

Mohlala says a robbery case was opened and an investigation regarding the incident is underway.

Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Lieutenant Colonel Busisiwe Kunene on 082 422 8198 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Alternatively, information can be reported via the My SAPS app.
