5 suspects killed during shoot-out in eMalahleni

A shoot-out in Schoongezicht left five suspects dead as the Hawks foiled an ATM bombing and recovered explosives and firearms.

Chaos erupted in Schoongezicht, eMalahleni, this morning when five suspects planning an ATM bombing were fatally shot.

Witbank News reports gunfire shattered the silence in the early hours as a multi-disciplinary team returned fire after the suspects opened fire upon realising they were surrounded.

According to Colonel Katlego Mogale of the Hawks, one suspect was arrested and taken to hospital.

SA News reports that Hawks national head Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya said the team acted on intelligence about a potential ATM bombing in the area.

“Information was operationalised, leading the team to Schoongezicht in eMalahleni, where the group was reported to be converging at an alleged safe house. The multi-disciplinary team was strategically posted to monitor the white Toyota Hilux identified in the intelligence information.

“The identified vehicle was spotted leaving the area, and when the team attempted to stop it, the suspects opened fire, resulting in a shoot-out. Five suspects were fatally wounded and one injured,” Lebeya said.

An R5 rifle, a scoped hunting rifle, three 9mm pistols, and explosives were recovered from the scene.

The bakkie in which the suspects were travelling is under further investigation.

Lebeya commended law enforcement agencies for their efforts.

“A call is made to potential robbers to withdraw from such activities, as this always attracts dire consequences. The team shall always be on alert,” he said.
