8 arrested in connection to the Boksburg cash-in-transit heist

Eight cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were arrested by the police and other services during an intelligence operation on June 26 in Boksburg.

The alleged suspects robbed a money van on Putfontein Road on the same day (June 26) at around 10.15am.

Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mopeli said the robbers were found in possession of the money.

“It is alleged the CIT van was driving along Putfontein Road, with the driver in front and two security guards in the back,” said Mopeli.

“Suddenly, the driver saw a Mercedes-Benz driving fast towards the van; the vehicle then crashed into the van and it flipped on its side.”

Mopeli said an unknown number of men pointed a firearm at the driver and ordered him to open the van.

“The robbers then removed the two guards from the van and ordered them to lie on the ground.

“They then took an undisclosed amount of money and firearms and fled the scene,” she said.

The CIT van and the Mercedes-Benz were then blown up with explosives.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, the three guards sustained minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

The eight men are expected to appear in court soon.
