9 injured following explosion at Matla Power Station near Kriel

One of the substation’s units has been taken offline to ensure employees’ and contractors’ safety.

Nine people were injured, one of them critically, when a transformer exploded at Matla Power Station in Ga-Nala, near Kriel, yesterday.

The explosion in Unit 6 happened at 17:00.

As a precautionary measure, Unit 5 was taken offline to ensure the safety of all employees and contractors on-site.

“Our first thoughts are with those who have been injured and we are ensuring they get the medical attention they need. All emergency protocols have been activated,” says Eskom Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo.

The technical teams are on-site assessing the situation.

The suspension of load-shedding remains unchanged.
