Abalone worth R26K found: Man arrested in Bloemfontein

A man travelling by bus from the Eastern Cape to Gauteng was arrested in the Free State after he was found in possession of 179 abalone.

A 35-year-old man was arrested at the Bloemfontein Tourism Centre after a security official received a tip-off about a man travelling with abalone.

Bloemfontein Courant reports a security official searched the bus the man was travelling in, and found the man in possession of a box of abalone.

The authorities were contacted. The man was travelling from Eastern Cape to Gauteng.

“The suspect was arrested after he could not explain the box containing abalone. The box with 179 abalone with an estimated value of R26 500 was seized by the police,” according to a statement released by the local Hawks.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court yesterday, and the court outcome was not know by time of publishing.
