Agency estimates impact of Johannesburg flooding could reach R150m

The Johannesburg Roads Agency says continuous heavy rains and infrastructural may cost the City of Johannesburg a large sum.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has estimated that the impact of the recent flooding across the city could cost an estimated R150m.

This was according to JRA head of planning Musa Mkhacane in a media briefing today, where he outlined the extent of the damage caused by the recent heavy rains as well as what interventions the municipality would take.

Earlier this month, Johannesburg experienced high volumes of rain over a two-week period that led to the collapsing of roads, overflowing and compromising of bridges and flooded storm water drains.

While the city in its entirety was affected, Regions C, D, E, F and G were identified as being particularly heavily impacted.

Mkhacane notes that it would take JRA about two weeks to completely assess the extent of the damage. The finalised figures would, however, would only be available in January.

Ahead of the festive season, MMC for Transport Funzi Ngobeni encourages motorists to exercise caution and refrain from taking any risks on flooded roads and bridges.
