Alleged KZN gang leader dies
An alleged KwaZulu-Natal gang leader has died following a shooting incident, police confirmed.
Gang leader Thamsanqa Maluleka (25), who was shot by police on January 28, died in hospital on Monday, South Coast Herald reported.
The gang, thought to have been headed by Maluleka, was allegedly responsible for a spate of housebreakings in the Scottburgh area, the murder of Vincent Enslin (32) in December and the most recent Pennington house robbery.
Police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum said the death of Maluleka brought the number of gang members killed to two.
“The other two gang members are in police custody,” he said.
Last week, three men were injured in an alleged gang-related shooting incident on Hannaford Drive in Phoenix, Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.
The relative of one of the victims said two men had come into a pawnbroker store and asked for an individual named “Calvin”.
“Despite having not located ‘Calvin,’ the men opened fire anyway, hitting three men in the stomach, leg and chest,” said the relative on Friday.
It is believed the suspects then went back into their car and drove off.
Investigations are ongoing.
