Alleged rapist dies after mob justice attack

Police have appealed to community members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands after a mob justice incident in the Thembelihle informal settlement in Lenasia.

Lenasia Police Station spokesperson Captain Hector Netshivhodza said residents taking the law into their own hands interrupted police investigations and “makes police work difficult,” Rising Sun Lenasia reported.

“We are advising the community to hand over the suspects to the police. Mob justice is a crime in itself,” said Netshivhodza.

Police opened an inquest docket after a suspect was assaulted and later died in hospital.

Community members in the informal settlement had allegedly assaulted a man after a six-year-old girl was raped in December.

After a manhunt, a suspect was found and was positively identified as the man who was last seen with the child minutes before she was raped.

The community were believed to have assaulted the alleged rapist, beating and stoning him.

Netshivhodza said the suspect was rescued by the police and taken to Leratong Hospital, where he died.

In a separate incident, three men were allegedly attacked when the community of Munsieville in Krugersdorp took the law into their own hands.

This after a woman was found murdered in the township on January 1.

One of the three believed to have murdered the woman was later apprehended and assaulted by community members.

The other two suspects were necklaced and stoned by community members.
