Alleged rhino poaching kingpin ‘Big Joe’ killed in Mpumalanga

Joseph Nyalungu was gunned down at his Mkhuhlu business just days after surviving a separate attempt on his life at the very same premises.

A suspected syndicate mastermind has been shot dead at his workshop near Mkhuhlu Crossroads, the Lowvelder reports.

Joseph “Big Joe” Nyalungu, who was facing a series of long-standing rhino poaching and explosives charges, died earlier today following a targeted midday ambush.

His death comes just over a week after he was shot and injured at the exact same location on May 8.

Last week, Nyalungu told the Lowvelder that he had been sitting at his business waiting for mechanics to repair the brakes on his vehicle when a lone shooter walked onto the premises and opened fire.

He recalled that more than 10 shots were fired during that initial attempt, leaving him with gunshot wounds to his left arm, leg, and stomach. Nyalungu was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment but was discharged shortly afterward.

Nyalungu, a former police officer, faced multiple charges, including illegal rhino hunting, possession of rhino horn, possession of explosives and money laundering.

Details regarding his death remain scarce at this stage. Updates will be published as more information becomes available.
