Amazon Web Services outage disrupts apps, banks and websites worldwide

Can't design on Canva or do your daily Wordle? Your favourite apps and programmes might be on the list affected by a worldwide issue.

Users of several popular apps and programmes worldwide have reported issues accessing them today, and South Africans do not to be exempt.

According to Downdetector South Africa, a tool that tracks user complaints for web services, Canva, Snapchat, Duolingo and the PlayStation Network are among the platforms affected.

The popular online graphic design platform, Canva, has taken to X to confirm that its service is down and that its team is working to resolve the issue.

Unilad reports that the problems are not related to users’ internet connections, but stem from the fact that many of these apps and companies rely on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS has officially confirmed the problem on their status page, stating that while the main issues are affecting their US-EAST-1 region, engineers are actively working to fix increased errors and slow speeds that are still affecting a wide range of their systems and causing knock-on issues for users around the world.

Reports are emerging that financial institutions in several countries are also experiencing issues.

Downdetector reports in South Africa on the Playstation Network.
