ANC elects first-ever female treasurer general

The ANC’s leadership election has concluded, with three women included in the Top Seven.

When the ANC 55th National Elective Conference results were announced today, Gwen Ramokgopa became the first-ever female treasurer general and President Cyril Ramaphosa retained his position as ANC president.

The other positions include deputy president Paul Mashatile (2 178 votes), national chairperson Gwede Mantashe (2 062 votes), secretary general Fikile Mbalula (1 692), deputy secretary general Nomvula Mokonyane (2 195 votes) and second deputy secretary general Maropene Ramokgopa (2 373 votes).

The party’s Pule Mabe said the conference will continue with its business, which includes the nominations of additional members. “All delegates were sent forms to either accept or decline the nominations. They will then cast their votes once the ballot paper is printed.

“We are still committed to ensuring that this conference is a resounding success. We are pushing for it to finish on December 20,” he said.

Regarding his position, he said he will support whoever the organisation selects. “I don’t invest emotionally in positions. I don’t want to stand here like an angry girlfriend. We now have a new leadership and we must run with it.

“I will continue to be a volunteer for the ANC. I’m going back to the streets now. ‘The streets’ means I will occupy my professional space. The leadership of the ANC will come and go, the ANC will remain.

“What makes me happy is to see this election complete and it has been a success. I’m quite happy with the outcome, the fact that it happened at a conference that didn’t collapse. It is a good story for the ANC,” he said.
