ANC stalwart Duarte laid to rest in Joburg

Jessie Duarte, the ANC’s deputy secretary general since her election in 2012, has been on medical leave since November last year.

Yasmin ‘Jessie’ Duarte (68) was described by her family as an art collector and music lover, who was fierce and unapologetic in her battle against especially women’s rights and the plight of the poor. Her homes over the years became known as ‘shift up houses’ as she always told her family to ‘shift up’ to make space if someone else in need of shelter and food, arrived.

Her funeral took place at the West Park Cemetery this afternoon. She passed away after an eight month long battle with cancer. As per Muslim rites, she was buried on the same day she passed away with ANC top leadership, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, attending.
