Another deadly Limpopo crash claims 6 lives on R524 outside Thohoyandou

Six people were killed in a crash near Thohoyandou yesterday, marking Limpopo’s third fatal road incident in a week.

Six people died following a crash on the R524 road just outside Thohoyandou in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Polokwane Review reports that, according to the Limpopo Department of Transport, preliminary reports indicate the vehicle lost control and veered off the road, scattering passengers across the scene.

Acting transport spokesperson Matome Tauetsoala said four passengers died instantly, while the driver and another person who sustained critical injuries were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they later died.

One passenger is still in hospital.

“The exact cause of the crash will be confirmed once investigations are complete,” he said.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye expressed her sadness over the tragedy, extending condolences to affected families.

She said that as part of Transport Month, law enforcement officers will continue to be deployed across the province to monitor road safety and enforce compliance.

“Drivers are once again urged to be vigilant as they travel to different destinations,” she said.

Third fatal crash in one week

This tragedy marks the third major fatal road incident in Limpopo in just one week.

Last Sunday, 43 people were killed and several others injured when a cross-border bus travelling from the Eastern Cape to Zimbabwe plunged down an embankment on the N1 North near Louis Trichardt.

A preliminary investigation revealed that speeding and faulty brakes were the main causes of the incident.

In a separate incident last Wednesday, one person was killed in a multi-vehicle collision involving a minibus taxi, a hatchback and a truck.

Call for vigilance

Mathye has urged motorists to be extra vigilant as Transport Month operations continue across Limpopo, with law enforcement officers deployed to monitor compliance.

“Drivers are once more urged to be vigilant as they continue with their journeys to different destinations,” she said.
