Armed gang arrested following tip-off

Six armed men and a woman have been arrested for illegal possession of firearms and suspected stolen property in Alexandra, Gauteng.

The gang was arrested at a house in the township after the Flying Squad acted on a tip-off from the public on Friday, Alex News reported.

Alexandra police spokesperson Warrant Officer Manare Ramotshela said the tip-off signified the cooperation of the public with the police in carrying out law enforcement.

Ramotshela said the guns and ammunition found would be sent for ballistics testing to determine if they had been used to commit other crimes.

All the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

In a separate incident, three men allegedly in possession of illegal firearms were arrested in separate incidents last week.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said in the first incident, an officer spotted a vehicle speeding along the Golden Highway in Devland with the vehicle’s lights switched off.

Officers chased the White Fortuner, and when they stopped it they found an unlicensed firearm.

Two men in their late 30s were arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and they were expected to appear in the Kliptown Magistrates’ Court.

In the other case, officers received a tip-off and found a man wanted for murder, attempted murder, business robbery and hijacking at his home in Bramfischerville.

He also allegedly had an unlicensed firearm in his possession.

He was taken to Roodepoort Police Station.
