Assault suspect gets bail as Mpumalanga woman fears for her life
A woman is in hiding after her former boyfriend, accused of breaking her arm with a spade, was granted bail in court.
A woman from Acornhoek in Mpumalanga has gone into hiding after her former boyfriend was granted bail in the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court. She said she fears he will harm her if he finds her.
Mpumalanga News reports the Acornhoek police arrested the man on Monday. He was taken to court shortly afterwards and charged with assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. He was granted R1 000 bail.
The ex-boyfriend cannot be identified to protect the victim.
The matter was postponed to March 3 for further investigations.
Police had been searching for him since January 15, when his former girlfriend opened a case against him. She alleged he slapped her and broke her arm with a spade earlier that day.
She went to the police station to report the assault but was told to go to a hospital for treatment first and then return to register a case.
“A plaster cast was put on my left arm before I returned to the police station to report the matter. The police accompanied me to where my attacker stayed, but we did not find him. He disappeared from the area and was only arrested on Monday this week, when his father took him to the police station,” said the victim.
