Attempted CIT heist: Car burns out on N4 near Mbombela
Armed suspects targeted a CIT van on the N4 near Mbombela, but security officers escaped unharmed as the heist failed.
A Mercedes-Benz was either torched or it caught fire during an attempted cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on the N4 between the KaNyamazane and Mara intersections near Mbombela on Saturday afternoon, Lowvelder reports.
According to a Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, multiple vehicles were involved in the attempted heist.
“This includes the Mercedes-Benz, a Ford Ranger and a Toyota Fortuner. According to some information received, the cash vehicle was hit from behind, but the security officials managed to get away and no cash was taken by the suspects, who also fled,” Mdhluli said.
He said the cash vehicle was headed to Mbombela. No injuries or fatalities were reported from the scene.
Mdhluli said the Mpumalanga Hawks are investigating the matter.
The section of the N4 was partially closed with a stop-and-go system in place since the incident to assist with traffic flow.
