Baby still missing: 2 women due back in Pretoria court next month

Thandeka Nyamane, who would now be six months old, vanished from her Lyttelton home nearly six weeks ago.

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court will hear further proceedings in the case of missing baby Thandeka Nyamane on November 18, when investigations into her disappearance will be reviewed.

Pretoria Rekord reports that National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the case is being handled as one of child neglect. She explained that the two accused women are at different stages of the legal process.

“Thandeka’s mother, who was previously arrested along with her friend shortly after the child went missing, had already been granted bail, while the second accused, described as the mother’s friend, appeared for a bail application but was denied bail.

“Investigations are ongoing, and the next court date is November 18 for further hearings,” she said.

SAPS Warrant Officer Marinda Austin confirmed that the baby, who was five months old when she went missing, has still not been found.

She said the mother has appeared in court four times since the child went missing.

“All leads are being investigated, and we appeal to the public: If you have any information, please contact the nearest police station,” said Austin.

Nyamane disappeared from her home in Fountain Squatter Camp in Lyttelton in the early hours of September 6.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk previously told Pretoria Rekord that two women had allegedly left their babies alone in a house at Fountain Squatter Camp in Lyttelton when they went out drinking at a nearby tavern.

“They were taking turns to check on the children. When it was her [the mother’s] turn, she found that her child was missing,” said Van Dyk.

The mother said she saw her at around 05:00, but when she returned to the house shortly after that, the baby was gone.

Nyamane has been described as chubby in build, with black hair and dark eyes, of small height and average weight. She was last seen wearing a pink, fluffy onesie with a hood.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts is urged to contact the investigating officer at 071 675 7489 or Carina Bam at 071 243 3065.
