Bail for man who clocked 214km/h on N1 in Limpopo

A man caught speeding at 214km/h on the N1 near Mokopane was granted bail after appearing in court this morning.

A 25-year-old man appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court this morning after he was arrested for reckless driving yesterday.

Limpopo Transport Department spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said in a statement released this morning that, while the province receives an influx of travellers, their officers remain strategically deployed to manage traffic flow and curb violations such as speeding.

“Yesterday, a 25-year-old reckless driver of a white Volkswagen hatchback was arrested for speeding at 214km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 near Mokopane,” her statement added.

Chuene this afternoon confirmed to Caxton Local Media that the man appeared in court and was granted bail of R1 000.

“[He is] scheduled to appear in court [again] on Tuesday,” she added.

Although the man’s vehicle was fitted with a Gauteng licence plate, Chuene could not confirm whether he is a resident of the province.

Her statement yesterday noted that they ‘are relieved there were no fatal crashes reported yesterday’ and that they ‘hope to maintain this record’.

It encouraged motorists to buckle up, follow speed limits, avoid overtaking on barrier lines, not drink and drive, and look out for pedestrians.
