Bangladesh national killed in Newcastle township drive-by shooting

A foreign national shop owner was shot dead in Osizweni while returning from town, with police yet to establish a motive for the killing.

A Bangladesh national was shot dead in his vehicle on Seldrift Road, near the Thandeka Bridge in Osizweni, yesterday afternoon (May 9).

Newcastle Advertiser reports that according to an official source close to the scene, who is not permitted to speak to the media, the shooting occurred at around 13:15.

The victim, who owned a spaza shop in the Newcastle township, was allegedly travelling back from town after buying stock.

Attack on Seldrift Road

It is believed he was stopped by another vehicle along the road before the occupants got out and opened fire on him.

Law enforcement officials were called to the scene, where paramedics declared the victim dead.

Investigation continues

The motive for the murder remains unknown at this stage.

The Newcastle Advertiser has reached out to Constable Nonjabulo Langa for official police comment. However, no response had been received at the time of publishing.
