Beloved reverend found dead in Germiston
A 74-year-old reverend from Primrose was found dead in his home after an alleged argument earlier this week.
A suspect remains at large after a 74-year-old Primrose resident was discovered dead in his home on Monday following a reported altercation.
The man has been identified as Rev Danie Oosthuizen in an article published this afternoon by Germiston City News, although the police have yet to officially confirm his identity.
Police responded to the scene at around 13:00 on Monday after receiving a report of a possible murder.
According to an earlier article by Germiston City News, Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi was quoted as saying that upon arrival, officers were directed by a woman to a bathroom, where the victim was found lying in a pool of blood.
Nevhuhulwi says police were told that the victim and a worker at his property had an argument and that screams were heard shortly before the worker left the yard.
The NGK Primrose East made the following announcement on its Facebook page on the day of Oosthuizen’s death. Translated from Afrikaans, the post read: “It is with great sorrow that we learned of the passing of Ds Danie Oosthuizen. He was tragically attacked in his home today (April 6) and fatally injured.”
Condolences from the community
The incident sent shockwaves through the parish and the wider community. Many residents shared their grief and offered condolences on social media and paid tribute to a man who, according to them, had a lasting impact on many lives.
Leandra Green describes him as a special person whose sermons touched deeply. She says how he conducted her son’s funeral service in September 2025 and did it in an exceptional way. “We are still listening to his sermon,” she says.
Susan van der Linde expresses her deepest sympathy for the family and says he was ‘truly a man of God’ who was always willing to help, regardless of whether someone was part of his congregation or not. According to her, his death leaves a big void.
Elize Muller says that she learnt a lot from him during her work in the church office and that his sermons always made people go home with a lighter heart. “Sometimes it felt like he was just preaching to me,” she shares.
Other residents also express their sadness, saying his unique way of preaching made people look forward to every Sunday’s service.
Franciska Olivier describes the loss as ‘terribly sad’ and says there will only be one like him for her.
