Black Coffee’s Grammy puts SA on the music map
One of South Africa’s own has been awarded a Grammy making him part of a select group of local artists.
Black Coffee has a lot to celebrate this week after taking a Grammy for his album Subconsciously in the Best Dance/Electric Album category.
Nkosinathi Maphumulo is a South African DJ and producer. He was awarded his Grammy at the 64th Grammy Awards in Las Vegas last night.
He went up against the likes of Major Lazer, Illenium and Sylvan Esso to take the win.
In his acceptance speech, Black Coffee expressed gratitude to his fans and those who worked with him on the album.
‘I want to thank God for the gift of music and for being able to share it with the world and heal souls and help people go through whatever they’re going through in life,’ he said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa congratulated the DJ on Twitter saying, “Congratulations to Black Coffee for being awarded the Best Dance/Electronic Music award for his album Subconsciously at last night’s Grammys. Thank you for flying the flag and inspiring a new generation of talent to take over the world.”
SAnews.gov.za reported that Black Coffee joins a select group of South Africans who have scooped a Grammy including legendary group Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Soweto Gospel Choir.
Johnny Clegg and Savuka, Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela have all been nominated for Grammys.
South African comedian Trevor Noah hosted the awards show.
