Body of Pretoria high school learner found on rugby field
Details surrounding the learner's death are unclear, but it is believed that she left her house at midnight.
The lifeless body of a Grade 10 learner was discovered on the rugby field of Hoërskool Garsfontein, Pretoria East.
The discovery of the girl’s body was made this morning by a security guard, as Pretoria Rekord was told on the scene.
At this stage, details about the incident are very limited. It is unclear how the learner died.
According to the girl’s visibly devastated grandfather, she had left the house around midnight.
“I don’t know why she came here or what might have happened to her,” the grandfather said.
According to Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, Education MEC Matome Chiloane was startled by the news.
Mabona says police were on the scene this morning to conduct their investigations.
“The learner’s family is also at the school and will receive the necessary support from our psychosocial support team,” he adds.
Mabona says it is unclear at this stage how the body ended up on the school grounds because the property is locked overnight.
“We call upon the police to urgently apprehend the perpetrators. We also extend our sincerest condolences to the family and the school community at large,” says Chiloane.
Mabona adds that the MEC is expected to visit the school later today.
