Bogus police make off with R46k near Springs

The victims were pulled over by robbers travelling in a car fitted with blue lights and a siren.

Two men were robbed of a large amount of cash while driving from Leandra to Springs on Friday morning.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for Springs SAPS, says the victims were travelling in a Hyundai H-100 when they were pulled over by the occupants of a white Volkswagen Jetta with blue lights and a siren.

He says that one of the men in the Jetta approached the driver of the Hyundai after he had stopped, demanding his driver’s licence.

“Two other armed suspects approached the vehicle and the victims were handcuffed,” explains Ramphora.

One of the suspects pushed the driver to the middle of the front seat and drove the Hyundai into a mealie field.

“The victims were ordered to lie down, and the robbers demanded money,” says Ramphora.

He says they fired a shot leading to the victims confessing where they were hiding their money.

The robbers made off with R46 000 in cash and three cellphones.

They threw the Hyundai’s keys into the field where the victims later managed to find it.
