Boy (11) drowns in water-filled illegal mining hole in Ekurhuleni

A young boy’s life ended tragically when he was unable to get out of a hole that he went swimming in.

An 11-year-old boy died on Sunday after drowning in a water-filled hole that had been left open by illegal miners in Kingsway, Ekurhuleni.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the boy had been swimming with two friends in the hole, which was filled with water from the recent rain.

An article published by Benoni City Times says the boy couldn’t get out, prompting his friends to seek help.

“The matter was reported to the police divers, who responded swiftly and retrieved the body. The 11-year-old was certified dead by paramedics,” says Masondo.

Benoni SAPS is investigating an inquest docket.
