Bus en route to Zimbabwe crashes on N1 near Makhado

A bus travelling from Gauteng crashed into a ditch near Makhado, reportedly leaving multiple fatalities and forcing the closure of the N1-29.

Motorists are advised that the N1-29 near a lodge outside Makhado has been closed in both directions following a bus crash early this morning.

Polokwane Review reports that according to traffic authorities, the bus ran off the road and fell into a ditch.

Emergency services are currently on the scene. Further details regarding injuries and the cause of the crash are expected once confirmed by authorities.

Alternative route

Motorists are urged to use the R523 (Nzhelele Road) as a diversion:

  • From Makhado (Witvlag), turn right onto the R523.
  • From Musina, turn left at Willysport onto the R523.
  • From Siloam, turn right onto the R523.

Drivers are advised to exercise caution, allow for possible delays and follow instructions from traffic officials on site.

MEC to visit scene

Meanwhile, spokesperson Matome Moremi-Taueatsoala said in a statement that Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye will be on the scene this morning.

“At this stage, the exact cause of the accident remains unknown. However, it is clear that there are multiple fatalities and injuries. A competent authority will confirm the numbers in due course,” his statement reads.

He added that the bus was travelling from Gauteng to Zimbabwe, but that it has not yet been established whether all passengers were bound for Zimbabwe.

“The vehicle remains in the ditch, making it difficult to determine the exact number of occupants at the time of the incident.”
