Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn reopen after road repairs
The return of visitor access to a popular Klein Karoo attraction is expected to provide a major boost to local tourism businesses.
The Cango Caves will officially reopen to visitors today (July 11), following an announcement yesterday that the access road has reopened after being closed for nearly two months.
According to Graaff-Reinet Advertiser, the reopening is welcome news for Oudtshoorn’s tourism industry, which has been significantly affected by the closure of the route following severe weather damage. The return of visitor access to one of the Klein Karoo’s most popular attractions is expected to provide a much-needed boost to local tourism businesses.
A boost for local tourism
Motorists travelling to the Cango Caves should, however, be aware that traffic is currently controlled by a stop-and-go system.
The road will remain open daily between 07:00 and 18:00 until further notice. To ensure the safety of road users, the route will be closed every night from 18:00 until 07:00 while rockfall mitigation and engineering works continue.
Authorities have thanked the public for their patience and understanding during the repair work and have indicated that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
